feministrocker asked: Hey, there. Me, again. I agree that sexism and racism can be an issue in rock music. I do like bands like Evanescence, Halestorm, and Lacuna Coil - who all have female leads - as well as singers like Joan Jett, Lita Ford, and Pat Benatar. Heart is also pretty good. Why do you suppose there seem to be more men than women who like hard rock and/or heavy metal? Do you think it's social conditioning? As a woman, I often resent how some people think I'm supposed to like pop music or soft rock.
I also enjoy Evanescence and Lacuna Coil, and a fan of symphonic Metal. I agree it’s probably something to do with social conditioning. I remember there was this ad long time ago (i forgot what is for) but it had two children. A girl who enjoys traditionally girl things and didn’t like to be loud. The boy was pretty much opposite and liked boy things. Even when young we’re presented in what girls are supposed to like and what boys should like. Rock and metal is just one of those things that are considered male interests like cars and sports. I’ve been to rock/punk/metal festivals and there’s been plenty of girls there but it’s still seen as male interest. I’ve also noticed if a girl doesn’t dress gothic/punk/emo/masculine, people are surprised that she enjoys those things but nobody will be surprised a boy like rock/metal whatever he wears.
