when a straight woman uses the term “girlfriend” to describe her platonic friend, rendering you momentarily surprised and delighted, then bummed when you realize that, yes, you are still alone in a crowd of straight people. 

especially when they know you’re queer or whatever

I tried to casually come out to my extended family over the summer without like…explicitly saying HEY FAMILY I’M QUEER, by repeatedly referring to my girlfriend.

My aunt pulled me aside at one point to discreetly ask me what exactly I’d meant by that, but the rest of the family didn’t even bat an eye and would ask things like “so what did you say your friend did, again?” later.

And even if I followed up with a corrective “girlfriend” they still wouldn’t acknowledge the fact that I AM IN A ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIP WITH A GIRL.

This. My mom has gotten a LITTLE better in that she occasionally refers to my girlfriend as my girlfriend, but 90% of the time it is still just ‘..friend’. Yes, with the little pause in front too.
